"The Droid Deception" is a comic short story published in Star Wars: The Clone Wars Comic UK 6.4, and later reprinted in Star Wars: The Clone Wars Magazine 1.

Plot[]

Jedi Masters Obi-Wan Kenobi and Mace Windu lead an attack into the Tambor Deep Space Centre, a Geonosian repair workshop for Separatist warships. Although accompanied by a unit of clone troopers from the 91st Mobile Reconnaissance Corps, including Commanders Cody and Ponds, they meet stiff resistance and soon find themselves on the defensive. Ponds attempts to breach the station's Security Complex with a missile launcher, but the explosion is unable to crack the bunker. Against Obi-Wan's advice, Cody organizes a walker attack against the station's Security Complex, but the assault is repelled and the whole unit, including Sergeant Swift, is killed.

Cody blames himself for his the loss, and Gorgol the Handy, the Geonosian Security Complex Commander, taunts the Republic forces with surrender, believing himself to be a superior strategist. Reinvigorated, the Republic forces refuse to back down. Mace Windu suggests splitting up: the Jedi will sneak behind enemy lines, Ponds will deactivate the transmitter relay for Gorgol's remote control over the defenses, and Cody and his men will provide a distraction.

Windu takes the droids head-on while Obi-Wan ambushes them from the rafters. Ponds reaches the transmitter room, and Cody and his men raise a white flag of surrender. Gorgol is suspicious of the action, but after his requested patrol squad reports an all clear, he and his units leave the complex to accept the surrender and humiliate the Republic forces with celebration.

Having now brought the Separatists into the open, Ponds destroyers the transmitter and the Jedi decimate the droid units. Gorgol attempts to activate the defense systems by remote, but the control is shot out of his hands by Cody. Having brought about the Geonosian's surrender, Obi-Wan praises Cody on his marksmanship and remarks that tactics ultimately bring victory over numbers. However, Cody notes that he had been aiming for the Geonosian's head, and that it was only his rifle's tendency to pull right that caused him to shoot the remote.
