Maze, designated as Alpha-26 or A-26 for short, was an Advanced Recon Commando captain who served in the Special Operations Brigade during the Clone Wars. He mainly worked with Jedi General Arligan Zey, leader of the Special Operations Brigade, stationed on Coruscant.
History[]
Maze was born in 32 BBY on the water planet of Kamino.[1][2] Maze was trained specifically by Jango Fett, the prime clone, as one of the 100 Alpha-class Advanced Recon Commandos, achieving the rank of Captain.[3] Following the First Battle of Geonosis, Maze was sent alongside Jedi General Arligan Zey to escort Omega Squad back to the nearest Republic base from their mission on Qiilura. Zey and the rescued Jedi Commander Etain Tur-Mukan continued serving on the planet following Omega Squad's retrieval and extraction of Separatist Scientist Dr. Ovolot Qail Uthan, with Maze following their lead.[4]
Approximately three hundred and sixty seven days following the First Battle of Geonosis, Maze had been stationed to serve as correspondent of the Special Operations Brigade, serving at the Headquarters on Coruscant, operating alongside Zey once more. While in a missions briefing with Zey, they were interrupted by Null-class ARC Captain Ordo, removing Zey's Padawan, Jedi General Bardan Jusik. As Ordo and Jusik left, Maze followed them, attempting to lecture Ordo on protocol. Ordo, in a hurry, decided to headbutt Maze, knocking him out of commission and breaking his nose, which formed a rivalry between the two.[3] After a domestic black ops mission carried out by Ordo, ARC Lieutenant Mereel, commando squads Delta and Omega, and a number of other GAR personnel, the strike team celebrated their victory at a local Coruscanti dinner. The squad, full of Mandalorian trained troopers, showed the Coruscant Security Force a performance of a war chant known as Dha Werda Verda, which was a very physical engagement.[3] In this chant, Maze joined and took advantage of the physical nature to assault Ordo, settling their score.[3]
As the years of the Clone Wars progressed, Maze utilized what little downtime he possessed to read, developing strong opinions about the state of the Republic and the Jedi Order. He felt that he, alongside many other clones, were robbed of a life they deserved, but willing to carry out the tasks he was ordered. In his study of politics, he determined he was not a fan of Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine, but was willing to carry out his orders as he was the commander-in-chief and believed the Jedi should not interfere as they were not elected.[5]
In 19 BBY, Maze was present at the Special Operations Brigade Headquarters with Ordo when Separatist forces began their invasion, capturing the Chancellor in the process. Maze secured Zey in the command bunker, locking down the command structure, while Ordo began to lock down the system. The role of an ARC on the ground if Coruscant was invaded was to secure command centers and strategic positions.[5] The battle took days before it was settled with a Republic victory. Shortly thereafter, Clone Intelligence members Jaing and Kom'rk relayed information about Separatist General Grevious' whereabouts, dispatching Jedi General Obi-Wan Kenobi to lead the assault.[5][6] Approximately one thousand and eighty-nine days after Geonosis, Maze and Ordo met once more in the headquarters, speaking of career plans and the intel they received from the other Nulls before Maze signed out for the evening.[5] Immediately thereafter, Palpatine initiated Contingency Protocol 66 through all Republic channels, marking the Jedi Order as traitors to the Republic.[5] Later in the evening, Maze had returned to the Special Operations Brigade headquarters, finding Zey and Ordo in the Zey's office. Ordo demanded to know whether the rumors of the Jedi's insurgency was true. Zey revealed that Palpatine was a Sith Lord, which Maze questioned, unaware of what that implied. Ordo filled him in on the Sith and their rivalry of the Jedi, however, Ordo was loyal to the Mandalorian way of life, which both the Jedi and Sith had fought against.[5] Ordo departed, with Zey telling Maze he had permission to give him a quick death. Maze, however, was unwilling to follow Jedi orders any longer and did not execute Zey.[7]
In three weeks following the re-organization of the Galactic Republic into the Galactic Empire, it was noted that several Jedi and clone deserters were special targets for the Imperial Commando Special Unit and that Maze was present on the list.[7] Maze would later contact the members of Clan Skirata for an extraction, who sent Jusik and Ruusaan Skirata to complete the task. However, Maze neglected to mention that he had brought Zey with him, attempting to save his former commanding officer whom he respected for his treatment throughout the Clone Wars.[7] The two brought Maze and Zey back to Kyrimorut, much to the chagrin of Skirata due to his force-sensitive grandson Kad Skirata, fearing that Zey would take him from the family.[7] Maze, however, stood up to Skirata and the Clan, showing his loyalty to Zey.[7]
Personality and Traits[]
Maze was born in 32 BBY on Kamino, cloned from the genetic template of Jango Fett, which gave him the attributes of the bounty hunter, including his height of 1.83 meters, black hair, and brown eyes.[2] Maze, being trained as an Alpha-class ARC, was less independent than their Null counterparts, but far more independent that the standard clone trooper.[3] Maze was very loyal to the Republic, but also developed opinions in his spare time, not allowing protocol to dictate his free-will.[5] He was not a support of the Chancellor, however, he believed that the Jedi were not fit to remove the Chancellor from office due to their unelected position.[5]
During Order 66, Maze had returned to the Special Operations Brigade headquarters, sure to find his former Jedi General present in his office. He had been unwilling to kill his former superior, despite Zey's status as a traitor, due to the respect that he had been shown during the war.[5][7] Maze had deserted from the Galactic Republic at the end of the war to assist Zey in his escape, eventually finding temporary sanctuary at Kyrimorut.[7]
Armor and Equipment[]
Maze was outfitted with standard Advanced Recon Commando equipment, namely Phase I and Phase II clone trooper armors. Maze's armor was lined with red trim, a standard designator for the Advanced Recon Commando captain. He also possessed dual blaster pistols placed in his kama, which he wore around his waist.[5]
