Special Operations Brigade (SOBDE), also known as GAR Special Forces, was a brigade of elite clone troopers in the Grand Army of the Republic. The brigade contained clone commandos, Advanced Recon Commandos, and clone shadow troopers.
History and Infrastructure[]
6 months after the start of the Clone Wars, the Special Operations Brigade started. The Null-class ARCs had trouble adjusting and forced everyone out, until their training sergeant came and calmed them down.[1] The brigade would send their commandos all across the galaxy. Their squads, including Delta and Omega Squads, were sent to planets such as Qiilura[2] or ships such as the Prosecutor[3] to eliminate certain threats.
Many ARCs worked alone, typically the Nulls. Prudii, for example, was sent all across the galaxy to destroy Separatist facilities and factories that created Battle droids.[4] However, there were elite teams of ARC, such as The Muunilinst 10.[5] This team was sent to infiltrate the Separatist's base on the planet Muunilinst.[6] They would take out a major blaster cannon, while losing only one man in the process. They would also rescue three Jedi Knights on the planet of Hypori.
The brigade also had clone shadow troopers, clone assassins, special operations troopers, and covert operations clone troopers. Shadow troopers were deployed to Utapau so Jedi General Obi-Wan Kenobi and the 212th Attack Battalion could come in without notice.[7] Clone assassins were trained to kill Jedi in the case that they went rogue. Special operations troopers were sent to planets such as Geonosis[8][9] and Christophsis.[10] Covert operations troopers, however, served to locate and execute ARC troopers that had deserted. On the planet Gaftikar, troopers Moz and Olun were sent to execute Sull, a rogue ARC. Darman of Omega Squad shot and executed them, because they had mistaken him for Sull.[11]

Unidentified Clone Troopers:
Special Variants[]
Clone commandos[]
The most standard trooper would have been the clone commandos, who were deployed across the galaxy on special missions. Commandos were typically deployed for reconnaissance, covert infiltration, sabotage, demolition, and assassinations. On occassion, commandos would be deployed to train militia on planets to fight against Separatist forces.[11] The commandos were also sent in to rescue certain factions in dire situations.[1]
Alpha-class Advanced Recon Commando []
Alpha-class ARC troopers were the second most used for the SOB. The Alpha-class were highly regarded by their commanding officers, but were usually highly apathetic. ARCs were deployed to assist in training militia,[11] as well as tactical battles, such as the Battle of Jabiim.[12] However, on occassion, they were stationed on Coruscant for training and logistical processes.[1]
Null-class Advanced Recon Commando[]
Null-class ARC troopers were the first batch of ARC troopers developed, which the Kaminoans deemed unfit for duty. However, one of the Cuy'val Dar - a training sergeant - named Kal Skirata stood in and saved them from being executed. The Nulls were highly adapt, highly intelligent individuals. They were typically deployed for covert infiltrations, reconnaissance, sabotage, demolition, and assassinations. They also were adept at training militias.[11] They were rebellious by nature and would eventually go on to live their own lives on the planet of Mandalore.[13]
Clone shadow troopers[]
The clone shadow troopers were typically deployed as the SOB's black operations - off-the-books missions. They specialized in gathering intelligence, special sabotage missions, counter intelligence, combating terrorism and espionage. They were created because of the apparent dwindling number of Alpha-class ARCs by Director Armand Isard.[7] Shadow troopers were deployed primarily toward the end of the war.
Clone assassins[]
Clone assassins were deployed on only the most unlikely of circumstances. The assassins were specifically trained to kill Jedi in case they rebelled against the Senate and the Republic. They were specially trained in a form of unarmed combat, which was called Teräs Käsi. The assassins also had the occasional training duel with Jedi Padawans, which enhanced their agility and focus. They were deployed at the initiation of Order 66.[14]
Covert operations clone troopers[]
Covert operations clone troopers were deployed on only select occasions. They were highly trained, with many of them being trained by Null-class ARC troopers. They were trained in assassinations, covert infiltration, espionage, and special missions. The covert operations troopers were specially tasked with the execution of deserters.[11]
Special operation clone troopers[]
Special operation clone troopers were deployed rather frequently during the years of the Clone Wars, with some units comprising of them completely. For instance, while acting as infantry, units such as Jet's unit and the Devil Dogs, were deployed to ground battles on Geonosis and Khorm respectively.[8][15] They were also trained for specialized tasks, such as flying experiment starcrafts.[10] Other troopers were outfitted with standard armor but placed in special units, such as The Muunilinst 10.[5]
