Clone assassins were a special operations clone trooper variant that served in the Grand Army of the Republic and the Galactic Empire when it was organized.

Clone assassins were commissioned by the Galactic Republic in secret, technically separate from the Grand Army of the Republic. Chancellor Palpatine justified the need for these troops in the legislation as a way to combat Jedi if they ever decided to rebel against the Senate and the Republic. The assassins were trained with the specific intentions of executing Jedi, trained with the art of Teräs Käsi, a form of unarmed combat.[1] However, a few clone commandos were selected to execute rogue clone troopers, who rebelled against the Galactic Empire.[2] In 19 BBY, with the initiation of Order 66, the Jedi were deemed as traitors to the Republic, with Darth Vader leading Operation: Knightfall on the Jedi Temple.[1] A squad of six assassins were deployed to protect the Jedi Temple communication center, where Vader had activated a beacon that transmitted to all Jedi in the galaxy, informing them that the war was over and that they were to return to the Temple.[1] After receiving the beacon's message and hearing of the attack on the Jedi Temple, Jedi Generals Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda, deeming it an obvious trap, decided to infiltrate the Temple in an effort to stop the signal's broadcast. Kenobi entered the Communication Room and was cornered by the squad of assassins Vader had stationed there, though he successfully defeated them all.[1]

Following the reorganization of the Galactic Republic into the Galactic Empire, clone assassins were reorganized, with commandos being brought into to track and assassinate clone deserters and dissidents.[2] Clone X was assigned a task by Vice Admiral Rampart to execute clone stormtrooper Cade, who planned to expose the Empire's destruction of Tipoca City to the public. Clone X was successful in his task, however, forcing him to be reassigned to track Cade's ally Slip.[2] While following Slip, he discovered the Pantoran Senator Riyo Chuchi was investigating the destruction of Tipoca City by way of Slip revealing he knew it was a cover up.[2] Clone X executed Slip and followed Chuchi, killing both her bodyguards in the process. However, while pursuing Chuchi, the assassin was stunned by former Captain Rex.[2] Rex escorted Chuchi to the Martez sisters garage on Level 1313, bringing the unconscious Clone X along with them. When he awoke, Rex questioned him, however, he revealed nothing except that he had known Rex previously. The assassin used an suicide shocker to execute himself and avoid any further questioning.[2] Soon thereafter, Clone Force 99 joined Rex in the investigation, revealing that the assassin's identification tags had been stripped from his armor.[3]

Armor and Equipment[]

In 19 BBY, the clone assassins were outfitted with Phase II clone trooper armor and a specialized helmet. The armor was equipped with mounted vibroblades on both arms. These blades spun out from a neutral position and could be locked in place to either follow the troopers' upper arms or their forearms as they swung at their opponents.[1] The assassins also wore kamas. However, once the Empire was reorganized, the assassins were outfitted with new equipment. The new design was a unique black armor with a helmet that was designed to make them look like bounty hunters. They were also equipped with a sniper rifle.[2]
